almond-3

Hi everyone,

We are really happy to announce Almond 3 has been named a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree. This is our third major award of the year so far to go with Popular Science as a “Best of What’s New” award winner for 2016 and Gartner Cool Vendor Award for 2016.

The CES Innovation Awards are sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the producer of CES 2017, still the world’s biggest and most important technology show of the year. Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, independent engineers and members of the trade media to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting-edge consumer electronics products across 28 product categories.

Entries are evaluated on their engineering, aesthetic and design qualities, intended use/function and user value, unique/novel features present and how the design and innovation of the product directly compares to other products in the marketplace.

Products chose as CES Innovation Honorees reflect innovative design and engineering in some of the most cutting-edge tech products and services coming to market.

What is Almond 3?

Almond 3 simplifies the connected home by enabling you to have great whole home WiFi and control your smart devices all from one device.

A quick visit to the connected home section of an electronics retailer and you will see that the connected home is no longer just about routers providing your WiFi fix. On display, there are a huge number of smart home products like lighting and thermostats, and also smart hubs designed to connect up all these individual smart products and allow you to get them to all work together.

A few years back, we saw how important smart home would be and, knowing that the router is the essential device in any home, we decided to integrate a smart hub into our router. We delivered the first router and smart home hub combos to market more than a year ago with Almond+ and Almond 2015. Almond 3 is the 2nd generation of that vision and a step up in many ways.

Mesh Router (or Whole Home WiFi System)

Almond 3 is a different kind of router based on mesh, a technology already proven in the enterprise and now made consumer-friendly. Mesh means several devices can work together and be controlled centrally to create one seamless WiFi network for your home. If you have areas in your home with weak WiFi or WiFi dead spots, it offers a much better solution than a router and range extender: a range extender creates another network and can’t work together closely with your main router to optimize data transmission.

Built-in Siren

Almond 3 has a built-in siren reducing the cost of creating your own DIY security system. Now, besides Almond 3, all you need is at least one door or motion sensor and you can set up monitoring and warnings to make your home safer and more secure.

Evolving and Improving Smart Hub Platform

As I mentioned above, it is also a smart home hub with the software home automation platform and built-in hardware necessary to enable you to connect up all your smart devices and then create automation rules to make your home more convenient, fun, secure and safe. Almond’s automation platform is continually being updated and improved. We recently announced our integration with Amazon Alexa making us the first router able to be controlled by voice. You can activate things like parental controls and guest network. While Almond smart home skills also enable you to control all thermostats, lights and plugs connected to Almond, whether they are verified by Alexa or not.

Connected Home means Home Automation not Just WiFi

With the introduction of smart devices and mesh WiFi routers the connected home has become a far more exciting category with growth opportunities for device manufacturers. Most router companies now have filled their product introductions with claims that their router is the center of the connected home, but, in reality, they do not have the hardware or software platform to communicate with your smart devices and act as a smart hub. This is because most smart devices don’t connect up and communicate via WiFi. They don’t have WiFi modules, instead use use Zigbee, Z-Wave or Bluetooth.

It is also not enough to just have this hardware support you also need a software platform to provide the automation between the devices.

Almond does have these features. It has built-in Zigbee and support for Z-wave and Bluetooth via dongles, as well as a software platform capable of rich automation that has already verified hundreds of smart devices including Philips Hue and Nest.

Next time you see a router that says it is the center of the connected home, make sure you ask what it can really do, otherwise, you will find yourself needing to buy a smart hub as well.

Unique Combination of Router and Smart Device Functionality

Almond 3 also offers unique functionality only possible because it is in control of your WiFi network and your smart devices. With Almond 3 you are able to use your smartphone joining your WiFi network as a trigger to get your smart devices to do something. For example, lights to come on or thermostat temperature to change.

Pricing and Availability

Almond 3 combines two devices in one and yet is around the same price as standalone smart hubs and whole home wifi systems.

You can purchase Almond 3 from Amazon or from our website.
